Wash, wash, wash our hands, all day long!It certainly seems like that’s what we are doing these days anyway. Make it into a song so it becomes a happy task to do. WOW!! How cool is that?
But why is it so important, now more than ever, to wash our hands properly and how do we make sure our children do the same? Let me explain:
We are in the midst of a worldwide pandemic, which we can all help to slowdown and eventually stop all together. This is the simple reason why we must put emphasis on washing our hands regularly and correctly. The official guidelines state that we should use soap and water, rub and scrub our hands together for at least 20 seconds, then rinse with clean water and dry on a clean towel.
When talking about this to our kids, firstly, it’s important to reassure our kids that they are safe at home amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. The last thing we want to do is make our kids panic or worry unnecessarily. Secondly, we can give them the facts, just simple and honest answers like ‘coronavirus is a germ that we can pick up by touching other people or things and not washing our hands properly afterwards’ or ‘sometimes bad germs make us poorly, so we need to avoid catching them by washing our hands properly regularly’.
Quite simply, we all need to club together (figuratively speaking, not literally! We are supposed to be social distancing after all) to help stop the ongoing spread of this contagious virus.
We can make them feel special too, like superheroes that are playing a special part in tackling this worldwide virus by making sure they wash their hands properly, to ensure nobody around them gets sick. Kids love to feel like they are helping and making a difference. Praise and recognition go a long way.
By helping our children understand what is going on in the world around them, they can adapt better to their new routines and will be more willing to follow suit.
From the team here at eco rascals, we hope you are in good health and staying safe at this confusing and testing time for us all. Please comment below with any good hand washing tips you have for little ones or good songs which you’ve made up while washing your hands. We can’t wait to sing them too!
