Toast topping suggestions

Fun Fact. The act of raising one’s glass in honour of someone or something has been given the word ‘toast’ because as early as the 1500s, people used to put a slice of spiced toast in their drink to make it more palatable as it would soak up the bitter and acidic sediments in wine. People would more likely add the toast at times of celebration!

So with 99% of UK households buying a loaf of bread each week, and at the time of writing this, most of us are spending a lot more time at home with hungry children, I thought I’d share eco rascals favourite toast toppings.

We love toast in our household – it’s so versatile and there’s plenty of ways to make it nutritious and exciting. I have my go-to bread that I always buy for myself, but with the children I tend to change it up so they have white, wholemeal and seeded.

If we were to have a week of toast for lunch only, this is what our week would look like:

Sunday - Mashed banana

Banana is not only great for your daily dose of potassium but also packed with Vitamin B6, Vitamin C and magnesium.

Monday - Smashed avocado with cottage cheese

Avocado is unique in that instead of its other fruity friends who are loaded with carbohydrates, avocado is filled with healthy fats. One avocado provides 25% of your daily Vitamin K needs too which is great for healthy blood and bones.

Tuesday - Hummus

Chickpeas are a great source of fibre and protein too. We like to add a sprinkle of paprika on our hummus after serving too which is great to introduce littles ones to more flavours.

Wednesday - Peanut Butter (or any nut butter) with banana slices

Peanut butters can be loaded with sugar and salt to modify taste. We only ever buy Whole Earth nut butters which are great source of protein and fats.

Thursday - Pureed apple with apple slices and cinnamon

Cinnamon is a powerful antioxidant that aids in controlling blood sugar and is high in fibre and calcium.

Friday - Warm chocolate spread with frozen mixed berries

Berries are loaded with antioxidants are low in natural sugars and help fight inflammation.

Saturday – Bruschetta toast.

Tomatoes supply us with vitamin A which supports immunity.

Activity idea

In addition to eating a lot of toast, we’ve also been playing with it recently.

We mix milk with food colouring and use toast as a learning opportunitiy.

So far, we’ve made rainbows, happy and sad faces, and we’ve done numbers 1 – 5!
